Hey y'all! The Girls Go South crew is back with something a little different today. As Northern transplants who've embraced Southern living, we're always fascinated by how media shapes our perception of different regions. Today we're taking a nostalgic look back at how one reality show completely transformed the image of our home turf—New Jersey!

The Jersey We Left Behind

Before we traded our Northern roots for Carolina pines, New Jersey was just home to us. But for the rest of America? The Garden State was mostly known through "The Sopranos" lens—all industrial parks and mobster stereotypes. Then in 2009, "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" hit our screens and showed America a side of Jersey that even surprised some of us locals!

How RHONJ Put Jersey on the Map

When we started Girls Go South, we talked a lot about the culture shock of moving from North to South. But RHONJ did something similar for New Jersey—it revealed the state's hidden glamour! Suddenly viewers were seeing Bergen County's sprawling mansions, exclusive country clubs, and upscale restaurants that rivaled anything in Manhattan.

Remember how shocked we were on our first Carolina visit when everyone asked if New Jersey was "really like the show"? That's when we realized how powerful these shows had become in shaping perceptions!

The Jersey Girl Tourist Trail

By Season 3, something fascinating happened—people started planning actual vacations around the show! According to New Jersey's Division of Travel and Tourism, visitor inquiries about RHONJ locations jumped by 27% between 2010-2015. As Jersey girls ourselves, we were amazed that our home state had become a reality TV pilgrimage site!

RHONJ Hotspots We Miss (Sometimes!)

Though we've fallen in love with sweet tea and Southern hospitality, sometimes we get nostalgic for these North Jersey gems that the show made famous:

  • The Brownstone: This Paterson venue owned by the Manzo family was THE place for Jersey special events

  • Cafface Beauty Bar and Envy by Melissa Gorga: Before finding our favorite Southern boutiques, these were the fashion hotspots back home

  • Rails Steakhouse: Where else can you sip cocktails named after reality show catchphrases?

North vs. South: The Reality TV Effect

One thing we've noticed since starting our podcast: both regions have been shaped by how they're portrayed on TV! While Jersey embraced its "Housewives" glam, the South has its own relationship with shows like "Southern Charm" and "Sweet Home Alabama."

The difference? While Jersey needed RHONJ to showcase its luxury side, the South's charm and hospitality were already well-established stereotypes—though we've discovered there's so much more depth to Southern culture than what makes it to TV!

From Jersey Girls to Southern Belles

Moving from North to South gave us a unique perspective on how these shows affect regional identity. When we left New Jersey, tourism officials were finally embracing the RHONJ effect, with the state's tourism website incorporating filming locations and county tourism boards actively promoting show-related businesses.

Meanwhile, here in North Carolina, we've found a whole new world of authenticity beyond what any reality show could capture—from mountain breweries to coastal hangouts that never needed TV fame to shine!

Finding Reality Beyond Reality TV

Our journey from North to South taught us that while shows like RHONJ might introduce you to a place, actually living somewhere reveals its true character. New Jersey has layers that no reality show could fully capture—just like our adopted Southern home has depth, history, and charm that goes well beyond any TV portrayal.

That's why we started Girls Go South—to share the real experience of Northern girls discovering authentic Southern culture, beyond stereotypes and screens!
