Hey y'all! If there's one thing we've learned since trading our Northern roots for Southern soil, it's that live music hits different depending on which side of the Mason-Dixon line you're on. As transplants who've experienced both worlds, we're breaking down the ultimate concert showdown: North vs. South!

The Vibe ✨
Up North: Concerts in the North are all about that fast-paced, polished energy. Think urban cool, carefully planned outfits, and crowds who've seen it all (and want you to know it). The applause is enthusiastic—but measured—because everyone's playing it cool.
Down South: Southern shows feel like one big family reunion! The laid-back atmosphere means you'll see everything from cutoffs to sundresses, and don't be surprised if strangers become your new besties by the third song. Plus, tailgating before the show? Absolutely a thing down here!
The Music Mix 🎵
Up North: The Northern scene thrives on indie, hip-hop, electronic, and experimental sounds. It's where you'll catch that band you discovered on TikTok before anyone else, and surprise guest appearances are practically expected.
Down South: While you'll find every genre here too, there's something special about how Southern crowds embrace country, rock, gospel, and Southern hip-hop. When a Georgia-born artist performs in Georgia? Magic happens. And yes, someone WILL yell "Play Free Bird!" (and mean it).
Food & Drink 🍔
Up North: We love our Northern cities, but let's be honest—venue food typically means overpriced cocktails and maybe a fancy grilled cheese if you're lucky.
Down South: This is where the South absolutely SHINES! BBQ that melts in your mouth, fried chicken that changes your life, and sweet tea (sometimes spiked) flowing freely. Our tip: come hungry!
The Venues 🏟️
Up North: From underground Brooklyn clubs to iconic arenas like Madison Square Garden, Northern venues deliver production value and bragging rights.
Down South: Outdoor amphitheaters under starry skies, historic theaters with unbeatable acoustics, and yes—even backyard porch shows! The South offers intimate settings that feel personal and authentic.
The Crowd 👯♀️
Up North: Northern concert-goers came for the music, not necessarily to make friends. It's standing room only, minimal small talk, and serious music appreciation.
Down South: Southern crowds make concerts feel like social events. Don't be surprised when strangers offer you a beer, pull you into a dance circle, or get emotional during ballads. It's a judgment-free zone!
Our Girls Go South Verdict
After experiencing concerts in both regions since moving to North Carolina, we have to say—both have their magic! The North delivers sleek, cutting-edge music experiences, but there's something undeniably special about Southern hospitality extending to the concert scene.
For college girls considering a move South (or just planning your next road trip), we highly recommend experiencing the Southern concert scene. The warm nights, the incredible food, and the genuine connections you'll make might just convince you that Southern living hits all the right notes.
